A herniated disc can result in a wide variety of symptoms. Left untreated, these symptoms can worsen over time. Thankfully, chiropractic treatment can help. At City Line Chiropractic in Bala Cynwyd, our team is here to help you recover and get back to feeling your best. Here, we'll take a look at the causes and symptoms of herniated discs, as well as explore how spinal decompression with our chiropractor can aid in your spine's recovery.

What Is a Herniated Disc?

In between the vertebrae that make up your spine are rubbery cushions known as discs. Each disk has a soft center and a tough exterior. Sometimes, some of the soft center pushes out through the tough exterior due to a tear. This is known as a herniated disc. This condition most often occurs in the lower back. Symptoms of herniated discs can include arm and leg pain, numbness or tingling that radiates to other parts of the body, and muscle weakness due to the nerves affected by the damaged disc.

Spinal Decompression for Herniated Discs

Thankfully, chiropractic treatment, such as spinal decompression, can help relieve the pressure on your damaged disc. When you come in for your first chiropractic care appointment, our chiropractor will discuss your symptoms with you and examine your spine to determine the cause of your symptoms.

If both you and your chiropractor decide that it makes sense to proceed with treatment, your chiropractor may recommend spinal decompression. During this therapy, you'll lie comfortably and fully clothed on a motorized traction table, where a harness will create slight movements throughout your body to help relieve the pressure on your damaged disc. The table is controlled by a computer under your chiropractor's guidance.

While you may experience some relief after your first spinal decompression session, it's normal to require multiple sessions to achieve full relief from back pain.
